Learn English with Ben
Fun and friendly One to One English Classes, in person or online
Hi guys!
I’m Ben, a TEFL-qualified teacher (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) based in Finchley, North London. Born and raised in London, I have been teaching for eight years and have students from all over the world, including France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Israel, Poland, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Switzerland. My classes are one-to-one: Most of my classes are online at the moment via Skype/Zoom, but I also teach at my home in Finchley and offer intensive classes and other types of courses in Central London (go to the 'Classes' section for more information).
“I am really happy with Ben, he is the best teacher I have ever had. He knows my weaknesses and helps me improve them.” (Rosa, from Spain)
“15 hours of English lessons with Ben gave me much more than the whole three-year stay in London". (Joanna, from Poland)
“He’s professional, friendly and has a lot of passion for the English language.” (Karolina, from Poland)
I have a real mixture of students, ranging from lower intermediate to advanced learners, with some studying for exams, such as the FCE (Cambridge First), CAE (Cambridge Advanced) and IELTS, and some simply looking to improve their English. My classes focus on the needs of the student.
I can help:
- To improve your grammar skills
- Speaking/pronunciation
- Reading and writing
- Preparing for English exams
- Business English
I am based in Finchley in North London. Most of my classes are online, but I am now taking classes at my home and I can travel to your house or location of your choice if expenses are covered (ask me for more information).
Private Classes
I teach all levels – from complete beginners to advanced English speakers – and all classes focus on the needs of the students. I can help you to prepare for exams, or simply to develop and improve your English.
General English
In your free trial lesson, I will assess your English and identify what areas need improving. Depending on your ability and needs, my classes will focus on:
- Grammar: Studying the tenses (how and when we use them), using prepositions (e.g. in, at, on), modal verbs, phrasal verbs, articles (a, an, the), the passive and active voice, and much more.
- Speaking exercises: Discussing important and interesting subjects, practising different grammatical structures and using new vocabulary.
- Pronunciation: If you struggle to hear the difference between through and throw, thought and taught, walk and work, or anything else, you are not alone! English is a nightmare when it comes to pronunciation, but I’ll fix any problems you may have.
- Learning new vocabulary: I like to include news stories and interesting/funny texts in my classes to introduce new words into your vocabulary.
- Idiomatic Expressions: We probably share a lot of the same, or similar expressions (how do you say ‘to kill two birds with one stone’ in your language?), but it’s important to learn idioms which are so commonly used in day to day conversation.
Where?
The classes take place at my home, or over Skype/Zoom. I can also take classes at your house or at a local cafe if expenses are covered (depending on your location). Take advantage of the discounts offered (see below) by booking classes in advance.
Skype/Zoom classes
Wherever you are in the world, thanks to Skype/Zoom etc, you can take classes online from the comfort of your own home. Online lessons are just as effective as face-to-face, offer more flexibility, and you don't have to leave your house. I email students with worksheets and I use the Skype text facility or screen sharing as a virtual chalkboard!

5 lessons: £165 (£33 p/h)

Intensive Courses
Are you coming to London for a holiday? I do intensive courses - classes every day (typically 2 hours a day) - to give you a real London experience and improve your English. The classes can be at my home, or if you prefer, in central London - so you can practise your English AND see the city! We can meet in pubs, cafés, or wherever you like.
1 week (10 hours) at my home = £300, or in central London = £500
If you're interested, we can meet for a free Skype class before you travel. For more information about this, send me a message.
Discover London and Practise your English!
This could be a great option for those wanting to practise their English AND get shown around by a Londoner! I will come to meet you in London, and we can design your day based on your needs. For example, we could do a two-hour class in a cafe, and then we can travel around London together, practising your English. I'm happy to recommend my favourite places, or go wherever you fancy!
5 hours (including a class) = £200*
*If you want more or less time, I am flexible, so please just tell me what you'd like to do and I'll give you the price!
Exam Preparation
Are you taking an English exam soon - or thinking of taking one?
Do you need to prove your level of English by doing an exam, such as the IELTS or CAE. Perhaps you require a certain band or level to apply for a job or university, or for personal reasons such as applying for a visa. Or maybe doing an exam will motivate you to improve your English. Whatever your motivation, I can help you get ready. I understand the stress involved in preparing for an exam, and it can seem quite overwhelming, but with my help you will give yourself the best chance of passing. Together we will look at real exam exercises, consider what grammar points and vocabulary you need to focus on, and do mock exams (practice exams based on the real thing).
I offer preparation courses for the following exams:
- B2 First, formerly known as Cambridge English: First (FCE)
- C1 Advanced Exam (CAE)
- C2 Proficiency Exam (CPE)
- IELTS (Academic or General)
- IELTS Life Skills
Class prices:
5 hour exam preparation course: £200
10 hour exam preparation course: £350
20 hour exam preparation course: £650
30 hour exam preparation course: £900
Exam preparation classes can place virtually via Skype/Teams etc, in person, or a combination of both.

About Ben
Born and bred in London, I have been teaching English since June 2015, having completed my TEFL course with a Distinction. My background is in media – I have a Masters Degree in Journalism from Birkbeck College (University of London) and I was a radio presenter from 2009 to 2016. I also studied Drama at Exeter University between 2006 and 2009.
My passion for languages started several years ago, when I decided to start learning Spanish. I have been studying at the University of Westminster since 2013, and managed to practise my Spanish during a trip to Argentina at the beginning of 2015. My love of languages inspired me to take a TEFL course, and I’ve been teaching ever since – and loving every minute of it!
I really enjoy helping people improve their English, as well as meeting people from all around the world with different cultural backgrounds. Hopefully I can help you too!

Testimonials
What some of my students say about me...
Rosa (from Spain)
"Hi!! I have been living in London for almost three years. I am really happy with Ben, he is the best teacher I have ever had. He knows my weaknesses and helps me improve them. I am truly grateful. In my last Cambridge test, the examiner said I spoke very clearly, and that is because of him. If you wish you can contact me anytime – rmmp.sol@gmail.com"
Brandon (from France)
"Hi everybody! I’m Brandon, a 21 year old French guy who came to London to improve my English. I decided to take 1 to 1 lessons instead of going to a school and I now know that it was the right choice.
I have been taking classes with Ben twice a week for the past 7 months and I can definitely say that his lessons are worth it.
Ben is really professional (always on time with an organised lesson ready for you), and he has this great quality that every good teacher has: he identifies your weaknesses and adapts his lessons to your needs.
Furthermore, Ben is really friendly and makes the classes enjoyable and funny.
I strongly recommend choosing Ben as your English teacher because with him, you’re sure to improve.
Feel free to contact me anytime at brandon.nacass@gmail.com. I would be happy to answer your questions."
Joanna (from Poland)
"Hi everyone! I've known Ben for just over two months and after this short time, I can say that he's an excellent teacher. He is very clear and detailed with his explanations and makes the lessons interesting. Learning with Ben is a lot of fun as well. He has helped me to improve my pronunciation, grammar, and speaking skills. I’d never considered Skype lessons but I found them as effective as face-to-face classes.
"15 hours of English lessons with Ben gave me much more than the whole three-year stay in London. Email me if you would like any more information: jsikora83@wp.pl "
Fabiola (from Italy)
"Ben is accurate, punctual, professional and able to identify your weaknesses so they can be worked on and improved. The lessons are also fun and never become boring. You can contact me by email at fabioladamato90@gmail.com."
Karolina (from Poland)
"I’ve known Ben for a year and a half now and I would highly recommend him as a teacher. He’s professional, friendly and has a lot of passion for the English language. Our two hour lessons are always very interesting and enjoyable. Thanks to Ben, my English has improved enormously."
Daniele (from Italy)
"When I started attending classes with Ben, my English level was quite low and I had a lot of problems forming ideas.
After almost 6 months of one-to-one lessons with Ben, I have improved so much without much effort.
Ben has been able to find my weaknesses and help fix them with his always well-made lessons and attention to detail.
The hours fly by quickly thanks to his fun and friendly personality. I'll certainly continue to have classes with him until I achieve IELTS certification.
If you want more information, don't hesitate to contact me.
Daniele - giome82@gmail.com"Michal (from Israel)
"I took intensive classes with Ben (10 hours a week) for three months and I really enjoyed the experience. Ben is a great teacher. His explanations are very clear and I feel that I made huge progress over the three months. The lessons are always fun and interesting, with a nice mixture of grammar study, speaking and writing exercises, and texts to improve vocabulary. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their English!"
Lorenza (from Italy)
"I had lessons with Ben both in person and via Skype in order to prepare for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Kind-hearted, supportive and patient, not only did Ben help me by going through past papers, but he also showed me real-life resources (such as the BBC show ‘Just a minute’) as well as creating new material focused on the toughest questions I might have found in the exam.
But for his help, I wouldn’t have been able to overcome my fear of the speaking part and pass CPE. Thank you so much, Ben!"
